Plywood vs Particleboard Cabinet Boxes: What You Are Actually Paying For

If you are comparing two quotes with a large gap between them, this is the first place to look for the explanation.
What the Two Materials Actually Are
Plywood is thin veneers of real wood laminated with the grain of each layer running perpendicular to the one below. That cross-lamination is why it holds screws, resists sagging and stays dimensionally stable.
Particleboard is wood chips and sawdust bound with resin and pressed into sheets. It is flat, consistent, inexpensive and perfectly stable in dry conditions. MDF is a finer-grained relative of it and behaves similarly.
Particleboard is not a fraud. It is a legitimate material used in most furniture and a great deal of cabinetry. The problem is specific and predictable: it does not tolerate water, and it does not hold screws under repeated load the way plywood does.

The Three Failures That Matter
Water. This is the decisive one. When particleboard absorbs water at a cut edge, the compressed chips swell and the swelling is permanent. A plywood box that gets wet from a slow supply-line drip will usually dry out with no lasting damage if you catch it. A particleboard sink base in the same situation swells, the bottom sags, and screw holding power is gone for good.
Screw holding. Hinges take repeated stress every time a door opens. In plywood the screw threads bite into layered wood fibre. In particleboard they bite into resin-bound chips that crumble under cyclic load, which is why sagging doors on older particleboard cabinets are so common.
Shelf deflection. A particleboard shelf loaded with canned goods deflects, and unlike wood it does not recover when unloaded. Over years the sag becomes permanent.
A wet plywood box usually dries out. A wet particleboard box is finished.
How to Tell What You Are Being Sold
- Look at an unfinished edge inside the cabinet: plywood shows distinct layers, particleboard shows uniform chips
- Tap the side panel: plywood sounds solid, particleboard sounds dull and dead
- Lift a spare shelf: particleboard is noticeably heavier for its size
- Check the back panel: a thin stapled-on hardboard skin is a cost-cutting sign; a dadoed, captured back is not
- Ask directly, in writing, what the box material and back panel construction are
That last one matters most. A bidder who will state box construction in writing is telling you something, and so is one who will not.
What About MDF, Plywood Grades and Melamine?
The plywood-versus-particleboard framing is a simplification, and the middle ground is worth knowing about.
MDF is denser and far more uniform than particleboard, with no voids and a very smooth face. For painted door panels it is genuinely better than solid wood, because it does not move seasonally and will not crack the finish at the joints. It shares particleboard's weakness with water.
Plywood grades vary a lot. Cabinet-grade plywood is usually specified by the quality of its faces, and what matters structurally is the core: better plywood has more plies, thinner veneers and fewer internal voids. A void directly behind a hinge screw is a failure waiting to happen, which is why cheap import plywood is not automatically better than good particleboard.
Melamine is a durable resin surface applied to a panel, most often a particleboard core. The surface is genuinely tough and wipes clean, which is why it dominates closet systems and cabinet interiors, but the core underneath is still particleboard and the edges still matter.
The useful question is therefore not just 'plywood or particleboard' but 'what is the core, and is every cut edge sealed'.
When Particleboard Is Genuinely Fine
We are not absolutists about this. Particleboard or MDF is a reasonable choice for upper cabinets well away from any water source, for a rental property where the economics are different, for a garage where budget matters more than 30-year life, and for painted door panels, where MDF is actually superior to solid wood because it will not move seasonally and crack the finish at the joints.
Where we will not use it is sink bases, dishwasher-adjacent runs, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and anything in a coastal home. Those are the places where the failure mode is not hypothetical.
