The Daily Cycle That Does the Damage
The marine layer rolls in overnight and deposits moisture carrying airborne sea salt onto every surface, inside the house as well as out. The next afternoon the sun dries that moisture off and leaves the salt behind as a fine crust. Then it happens again.
That cycle is far more aggressive than either humidity or salt would be alone. Ocean humidity dissolves the salt into a thin briny film on metal, which is a far better electrolyte than water, and corrosion accelerates sharply. What Actually Fails, In Order
Hinges first, and usually from inside the cup. European-style concealed hinges sit in a 35mm bored cup in the door, which traps moisture against the metal where it cannot dry. Standard plated hinges in a beachfront kitchen commonly show corrosion long before anything else does.
Door edges second. A cabinet door is only sealed on the faces most manufacturers bother to seal. If the top, bottom and side edges are left bare, moisture enters through the exposed edge, the core swells, and the stile bows. Once a door has bowed it does not come back.
Box cores third. Any particleboard or MDF core that meets water at a cut edge swells irreversibly and loses screw holding power. Under a sink in a coastal home this is a matter of when, not if.
Finishes last. A properly cured catalyzed finish holds up well. A finish that was cured in humid air never fully hardens, stays soft, and blocks, meaning the door sticks to the frame and tears its own coating.
What to Specify Within Five Miles of the Water
- 316 stainless hinges, slides and pulls rather than standard plated hardware
- Plywood boxes, never a particle core, with every cut edge sealed
- All six sides of every door and drawer front sealed, not just the faces
- Sealed toe kicks, since that is the lowest and wettest point in the room
- Doors sprayed and cured flat in a controlled environment, not on site
- Ventilated storage for anything that goes away damp, such as wetsuits
None of this is exotic and none of it should be presented as a premium upgrade. It is simply the correct specification for the environment. If a quote for a beachfront kitchen does not mention hardware grade or edge sealing, ask why.
What Homeowners Can Do
Run the extractor fan when cooking and for ten minutes afterwards, since cooking moisture adds to a load that is already high. Leave cabinet doors ajar occasionally in rooms that stay closed up, particularly bathrooms and laundry closets. Wipe down hardware periodically, because removing the salt crust removes the electrolyte. And deal with any under-sink drip immediately rather than putting a towel down, because in this climate a slow leak destroys a box far faster than it would inland.
