Your Thermofoil Cabinet Doors Are Peeling. Here Is Why, and What to Do

Camarillo Custom Cabinets gets this call constantly from Moorpark, Newbury Park and the Mission Oaks side of Camarillo, and it is almost always the same story: a white cabinet door beside the oven where the surface has bubbled, lifted and started peeling away from whatever is underneath.
That material is rigid thermofoil, and the news is half bad and half good. The bad half is that it cannot be repaired. The good half is that the cabinets behind it are usually in fine shape, which makes this a much cheaper problem than it looks.
What Rigid Thermofoil Is
Thermofoil, often called RTF, is a vinyl film that is heat-and-vacuum bonded onto a shaped MDF door blank. It gave manufacturers a seamless, perfectly uniform painted look at a fraction of the cost of a sprayed finish, and it dominated tract construction from the late 1980s through the 2000s.
It is genuinely durable in the middle of a run. Its weakness is heat, and specifically heat at the edges, where the film wraps around and its adhesive bond is thinnest.

Why It Always Fails in the Same Places
Look at where yours is lifting and it will almost certainly be one of these: the door or drawer bank immediately beside a wall oven, the door above or beside the dishwasher where vented steam escapes, the panel adjacent to a cooktop, or a door near a toaster oven's usual position.
The mechanism is the same in each case. Repeated heating cycles soften the adhesive, the vinyl expands and contracts at a different rate from the MDF core, and over years the bond gives way starting at an edge. Once air gets under the film the failure accelerates, because the delaminated area insulates and traps more heat.
Thermofoil fails at heat sources: ovens, dishwasher vents and cooktops, starting at an edge.
Why It Cannot Be Repaired
People try, and it is worth explaining why it does not work. Glue will not re-bond it, because the original bond was made under heat and vacuum pressure across the entire surface and cannot be recreated with a clamp. Paint will not stick to it durably, because vinyl is specifically designed to resist surface adhesion. Heat guns soften the film but also distort it, and once distorted it will not lie flat again.
Anyone who offers to refinish thermofoil doors is either misidentifying the material or selling you something that will fail at the same heat source within a year. We turn down those jobs and quote replacement doors instead.
Why This Is Good News in Moorpark
Mountain Meadows is roughly 2,500 single-family homes that broke ground in 1983 and built out through the early 1990s, with most dating from 1987 to 1996, spread across Buttercreek Estates, Countryside, Quail Ridge and The Willows. That is squarely the thermofoil window, and it is why we see the same failure across the whole tract at roughly the same time.
The important part is that the failure is confined to the doors. The boxes in these homes are typically still square, still holding screws and perfectly capable of carrying new doors for another two decades. That makes this a refacing job rather than a tear-out, at roughly a third of the cost of full replacement.
One thing always gets replaced alongside the doors: the hardware. Cabinetry from this era was commonly hung on hinges sold well below ANSI/BHMA A156.9 Grade 1, the tier tested to 100,000 open-and-close cycles, and after thirty years they are spent regardless of how the doors look.
