Kitchen Cabinet Trends for 2026, and Which Are Worth Following
Camarillo Custom Cabinets builds what people ask for, but we get asked often enough what is actually current that it is worth setting out, along with an honest view of which of these will still look right in a decade and which will date.
The headline shift for 2026 is a real one rather than a magazine invention. According to the NKBA 2026 Kitchen Trends Report, 59 percent of designers say wood grain is overtaking painted cabinetry, with white oak the most requested species. After roughly fifteen years of painted white kitchens, that is a genuine turn.
Wood Grain Is Back, and White Oak Leads
The move toward natural wood is the defining change. White oak, particularly rift-sawn where the grain runs in straight parallel lines, is the most requested species, and demand is also shifting toward medium and darker tones including walnut.
This is a trend we are comfortable recommending, because it is closer to a return than a novelty. Wood reads as warm, it hides wear better than a flat painted surface, and it does not carry the risk that a specific paint colour does of looking like the year it was chosen.
The practical caveat is cost. Stain-grade work costs more than paint-grade because the material has to be selected for appearance and, on a long run, the grain should be sequenced across adjacent doors so the wall reads as one piece of timber rather than a set of parts.

Door Styles Are Getting Simpler
The heavy raised-panel door with decorative corbels and elaborate stacked crown has had its moment and is now the clearest marker of a mid-2000s kitchen. What has replaced it is slimmer: narrow-rail shaker and flat slab doors, with minimal or no upper moulding.
Slim shaker is the safest choice available right now. It has been in continuous use for over a century, it suits almost every house type in this county from Santa Paula Craftsman to Mission Oaks tract, and it has never looked dated for long.
Slab doors are genuinely contemporary and work beautifully in the right house, particularly in wood. In a 1920s bungalow they can look imported from a different building.
Two-Tone, Done With Restraint
Two-tone kitchens continue, and the execution that works is painted perimeter cabinets with a stained wood or contrasting painted island. It works because it gives the eye a single focal point without fragmenting the room.
Where two-tone goes wrong is when it becomes three-tone, or when the contrast is applied to several disconnected runs. One deliberate contrasting element reads as designed; several read as indecisive.
Trends We Would Think Twice About
Very dark, saturated colour on every surface. It photographs beautifully and lives less well, particularly in a north-facing kitchen. In coastal Ventura County light it can flatten a room considerably.
Open shelving replacing all wall cabinets. It looks superb styled and requires genuine discipline daily. It also removes exactly the storage most kitchens in this county are already short of.
Handleless push-to-open throughout. Clean-looking and, in a busy family kitchen, a source of daily irritation and greasy door fronts. It works better on uppers than on the base cabinets people actually shove.
Anything requiring a proprietary component. If a system depends on parts from one manufacturer, replacing a damaged door in eight years may not be possible.
The Choices That Never Date
- Plywood boxes, because nobody has ever regretted a cabinet that lasted
- Full-extension drawers instead of doors on base cabinets
- Cabinets run to the ceiling rather than stopping at 84 inches
- Grade 1 soft-close hardware you stop noticing because it just works
- Shallow adjustable pantry shelving where you can see a single row
- Task lighting under the wall cabinets
None of these are style decisions and all of them outlast whatever colour you choose.
