Start With the Boxes, Not the Doors
Open a base cabinet and look at the bottom panel, particularly under the sink. You are checking four things: whether the box is plywood or particleboard, whether there is any swelling or discolouration from a slow supply-line leak, whether the shelves have permanently deflected under load, and whether the screws still hold where the hinges mount.
If the box is plywood and dry, it will carry new doors for another two decades and refacing or refinishing is genuinely on the table. If it is particleboard and has taken water, the core has swollen permanently and lost its screw holding power. A new door on a failing box is money spent twice, and no finish will fix it.

Refinishing: Cheapest, When the Door Style Still Works

Replacement: When the Layout Is the Problem
Replacement is the right answer when the boxes have failed, when you are moving plumbing or taking out a wall anyway, or when the arrangement genuinely fights how you cook. It is worth knowing the resale maths before you commit. A Simple Decision Path
- Boxes sound, layout works, only the colour is dated: refinish
- Boxes sound, layout works, doors dated or damaged: reface
- Boxes sound but there is a soffit or dead corner you want gone: replace
- Boxes particleboard and swollen at the sink: replace
- Moving plumbing, gas or a wall: replace, since the run changes anyway
- Selling within two years and the boxes are fine: refinish or reface
If two of these apply and they point different directions, get both quoted. Any cabinet company that only ever recommends the service it happens to sell is not giving you an assessment, it is giving you a pitch.
